Yesterday, June 14, 2026, at the historic UFC Freedom 250 — the first UFC event ever held on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington D.C. — Brazilian lightweight Mauricio Ruffy delivered a spectacular first-round knockout against Michael Chandler. In one of the most symbolically charged nights in UFC history, Ruffy not only won the fight, but used the biggest stage in combat sports to proclaim the Gospel.
Right after the victory, with the mic in hand, Ruffy boldly recited one of the most beloved verses in the entire Bible:

Right after the victory, with the mic in hand, Ruffy boldly recited one of the most beloved verses in the entire Bible:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

He continued:
“Jesus saved my life. He wants to save your life too. Give your life to Jesus.”

The moment was powerful. Ruffy also proposed to his wife Nadine inside the Octagon, turning the celebration into a beautiful testimony of faith, love, and victory.

A Fighter Rooted in Faith

Mauricio Ruffy is an outspoken evangelical Christian. He has shared openly how Jesus pulled him out of deep depression and suicidal thoughts. This faith was tested even more painfully after the tragic suicide of his brother in late January 2026.

Just days before his fight at UFC 325 in February, Ruffy’s brother took his own life. In an emotional post-fight interview after defeating Rafael Fiziev, Ruffy dedicated the victory to him, saying: “My brother used to watch me fight… He took his own life. Don’t do this. Jesus is my Lord, Jesus is my Savior. Learn about Jesus, meet Jesus, and it will save your life.”

He has spoken candidly about how the pain almost led him to the same path, but that encountering Jesus gave him strength and purpose to continue.

Ruffy has also shown remarkable integrity by refusing a massive R$ 48 million (approximately $9 million USD) sponsorship deal from a betting company.

In a powerful testimony at the Centro de Treinamento da Igreja Lagoinha in December 2025, he revealed that the offer came before his second-to-last fight at the time. The condition was clear: he could not mention Jesus in the Octagon or in public appearances. Ruffy refused without hesitation, stating: “Anything that goes against God, I say no. The only one who benefits from this is me, because the Lord brings me peace.”

In a world where many athletes avoid mentioning faith to protect sponsorships and popularity, Ruffy chose Christ over money. That kind of courage deserves respect.

A Catholic Reflection

Although Ruffy comes from an evangelical background, his public proclamation of John 3:16 and his gratitude to God remind us of the shared Christian heritage we all hold dear. In Catholic teaching, every bold witness to Christ is a light in the darkness (Matthew 5:16). Moments like this show that the hunger for truth and for God exists even in the most unexpected places — including inside the UFC Octagon.

Let us pray for Mauricio Ruffy, for his family, and for all athletes who have the platform to speak about Jesus. May the Holy Spirit continue to work through him, and may this event inspire many to seek the Lord.

“I am not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.” (Romans 1:16)
