Dale was a convert to the Catholic faith. Approximately 25 to 30 years ago, he entered the Church with the guidance of Deacon Scott Dodge of St. Olaf Catholic Church in Bountiful. Those who knew him described him as a man of quiet confidence — humble, generous, and always ready to serve others without seeking attention.
A U.S. Air Force veteran who had recently retired, Dale was a devoted husband of nearly 50 years, a loving father of three, and a grandfather. In his free time, he worked as an artist, creating sculptures, paintings, and photographs. One of his final and most meaningful works was a bronze relief of Saint Olaf, the patron saint of his parish and of Norway.
The sculpture, titled Sanctus Olavus, was completed and installed at St. Olaf Catholic Church in the spring of 2026.

It depicts the Norwegian king and martyr with his traditional attributes: the axe, the royal orb, and a cross-topped staff. The relief includes the inscriptions “Rex Norvegiae 1015–1028” and “Olai Haraldsson 995–1030,” along with a reference to Nidaros (Trondheim). Dale donated the piece to the parish as an act of devotion.
Just months after the sculpture was dedicated, Dale and Reinette stopped at a Tesla charging station near the newly opened In-N-Out restaurant while traveling to a family reunion. It was there that the gunman opened fire. Dale was killed. Reinette survived but faces a long and difficult recovery.
In the days following the tragedy, parishioners of St. Olaf Catholic Church and the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City gathered to pray the Rosary for Dale and his family. The parish has announced plans to place a commemorative plaque near the St. Olaf sculpture he created.
Dale Schultz leaves behind his wife Reinette, three children, and two grandchildren. He will be remembered not only for the way his life ended, but for the quiet faith, creativity, and love with which he lived it.
